Biography

Hans-Georg Breitinger is Full Professor and Head of the Department of Biochemistry at the German University in Cairo (GUC). He studied Chemistry in Düsseldorf, receiving a Ph.D. in Organic Chemistry in 1993 working on the properties of natural and synthetic amylose and its applation in chromatography. From 1993 – 1997 he worked in the laboratory of Geoprge P. Hess at Cornell University, Ithaca, NY, USA, on the synthesis and charaterization of light-activated neurotransmitters and kinetic studies of synaptic ion-channel receptors. He then joined the group of Cord-Michael Becker at the Institute of Biochemistry, University of Erlangen, where he completed his cumulative habilitation in 2003, working on kinetics of neuronal glycine receptors and pathomechanisms of glycine receptor-associated diseases. In 2004 he accepted a position as Full Professor and head of the Department of Biochemistry at the German University in Cairo.
At the GUC, he established theoretical and practical courses of Organic Chemistry, Biochemistry, Biomacromolecules, Bioinformatics and Cell Biology, and is the coordinator for the Biotechnology study program. He is head of the Ethics committee, and member of the Faculty Research and public relations committees. In 2005 and 2006 he received an award of the GUC Pioneers Student Group for outstanding efforts in teaching.
His research focuses on ion channels, biochemistry of membrane receptors, antimicrobial peptides and isolation of new pharmaceuticals from natural resources. He established and maintains the only running laboratory for Patch-Clamp electrophysiology in the country.
Hans-Georg Breitinger is an Associate Editor at Frontiers in Molecular Neuroscience, referee in numerous scientific journals, and member of the German Society for Biochemsitry and Molecular Biology, the German Chemical Society, the German Society for Biophysics, and the Egyptian Network of Neuronal Diseases.

Biography

Dr. Gad is a professor of Biochemistry and former dean of Faculty of Pharmacy & Biotechnology at the German University in Cairo (GUC), graduated 1st of 500 from Pharmacy, Cairo University, M.Sc. Biochemistry, Cairo University, completed Ph.D. at age of 30 from Medical College of Pennsylvania, USA, worked as Prof./Head of Biochemistry department at Cairo, GUC, October 6, Ain Shams and Helwan Universities since 2002, acted as Vice-Dean for Research and Graduate Studies at Ain Shams University and for Academic Affairs at GUC, chief coordinator of TEMPUS Curriculum development project in Pharmacy (5 European and 3 Egyptian Universities), received fellowship from American Heart Association and National Promotional Prize in Biomedical Sciences (2002), received 2 STDF grants from National Academy of Science, board member of the Egyptian National Committee of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology and of the National Committee for Promotion to Professors and Associate Professors in the field of Biochemistry, member of the Higher Election Committee of Egyptian Syndicate of Pharmacy, member in several scientific societies, reviewer to several scientific journals, has 74 international publications and 93 conference abstracts, published selected articles in “Biology of Nitric Oxide” book, Portland Press, 2000 and in the book: Biomarkers in Cardiovascular Disease, Edition: 2016, Publisher: Springer Netherlands, Editors: Vinood B. Biography

Dr. Sahar is an Associate Professor in Biochemistry in the Faculty of Pharmacy and Biotechnology at the German university in Cairo (GUC)(2006 till now).
Dr Sahar has many international publications in the field of cardiovascular diseases, diabetes, and obesity & polycystic ovary syndrome Is a co-author in an article in the Book “Biomarkers in Cardiovascular Disease, Edition: 2016, Publisher: Springer Netherlands, Editors: Vinood B. Patel & Victor R. Preedy and in the book” Determination of Mercaptopurine metabolites and toxicity in children”, Edition 2017, Publisher: Scholar’s Press.
Dr. Sahar is one of the Research team of Prof. Mohamed Zakaria Gad in the German University of Cairo who received STDF grant from National Academy of Science.
Dr. Sahar got a short postdoctoral stay in Hamburg-Ependorf
Dr. Sahar is head of Mentoring Program in Faculty of Pharmacy and Biotechnology.
Dr. Sahar is head of Community Services in Faculty of Pharmacy and Biotechnology.
Dr. Sahar is a member in several scientific societies, reviewer to several scientific journals.
Dr. Sahar instructed and organized more than 10 workshops in the GUC for the students in Conventional, real time PCR, proteomics, stem cells and clinical nutrition.
Dr. Sahar is an evaluator for DAAD and STDF scientific programs.

Biography

Dr Ingy Hashad obtained her PhD in Biochemistry and is currently working as lecturer in Biochemistry department since 2014.She pursued her postdoctoral studies in the field of cardiovascular genetics and she was a member of the Science and technology development fund (STDF). She had 2 DAAD postdoctoral research stays. One in Molecular Genetics Research lab at Charite Hospital in Berlin and the other at Max Delbruck centrum for molecular Medicine in Berlin.

She contributed in the publishing of a book chapter and more than 12 articles in international journals.

She contributed in more than 11 international and 6 national conferences and was recognized with 4 awards in 4 international conferences for best research presentation and 2 awards in 2 national conferences for best presentation and posters presented.

As for GUC administrative tasks, she is the head of ‘’Academic Video Library ‘’ project supporting all faculties of the GUC and is the responsible person for the activities of the pharmacy graduates alumni committee .

She obtained her clinical nutrition diploma from the American university in Cairo and the American association of continuing medical Education in 2016 and is currently the nutrition consultant for Hero (Swiss Baby Food Company) in Egypt and Middle East and nutraceutical consultant for several pharmaceutical companies.

Being involved in both academia and industry, she was assigned twice by the German ASSIN (The Accreditation Agency for Study Programs in Engineering, Informatics & Natural Sciences) in the implementation of accreditation procedures for the bachelor programs of both Food Quality &Safety in addition to Food Processing Technology in international universities.

Biography

Ulrike Breitinger is working as Lecturer in the department of Biochemistry at the German University in Cairo (GUC). Ulrike Breitinger studied Mineralogy at Cologne University with major in crystallography. After obtaining the undergraduate degree (Vordiploma) from Cologne University, she worked from 1995 -1997 for 1 ½ years at Cornell University in the lab of Professor Steven Ealick in the field of protein crystallography. She continued her advanced studies at the University of Erlangen and performed her diploma thesis in the group of Prof Dr Robert Huber at the Mack-Planck Institute in Munich. Here she worked on purification, crystallization and structure determination on Cystathionine-β-Lyase. In May 2000 she got her diploma degree from the University of Erlangen. Starting in Sep 2000 she worked in the group of Prof. Cord-Michael Becker at the University of Erlangen on her doctoral thesis with the topic ‘Structural and functional characterization of isolated domains of the inhibitory Glycine receptor’ and obtained her degree in 2004. In the same year Ulrike Breitinger moved to Cairo. From 2006 to 2016 she worked at the German University in Cairo as Senior Researcher in the department of Biochemistry on funding from German and Egyptian grants. In 2016 she accepted a part-time position at the GUC as lecturer in the department of Biochemistry.
Ulrike Breitinger’s main research interests are functional studies on ion channels using patch clamp electrophysiology, protein biochemistry, bioanalytics, recombinant peptides and proteins, investigation of antimicrobial peptides, and isolation of new pharmaceuticals from natural resources, mostly Red Sea organisms.

Biography

Dr. Sally’s Ph D. research focuses on the association of Gene Polymorphism in DDAH2 and eNOSgene with the incidence of cardiovascular diseases and investigating the role of some transcription factor sites in the regulation of DDAH2 and eNOS expression (construction of DDAH2 5’ promoter/reporter deletion constructs and cloning of human DDAH2 and eNOS promoter/reporter constructors. This allowed me to learn more about Genome Association studies and the discovery of novel biomarkers associated with cardiovascular and Metabolic diseases using several techniques as western blot, Mass spectrometry and Liquid Chromatography –Tandem Mass Spectrometry techniques , expertise in cellular and molecular biology such as mammalian cell culture, RNA and protein analysis, gene overexpression/knock down. It also allowed me to learn new techniques in the detection of Single nucleotide Polymorphisms using TaqMan real-time polymerase chain reaction assay and SDS for allelic discrimination analysis, as well as, primer designing and sequencing. Also worked on statistical analysis of genetic data, and in the use of relevant genetic databases (e.g. Ensembl, Hapmap etc).One of Dr. Sally’s studies as a supervisor was investigating the effect of omega-3 fatty acids (ω-3 FAs) on brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) gene expression, using in vivo and invitro models, to unravel the potential mechanisms of polyunsaturated fatty acids use in obesity.

Research Interests

Dr. Sally’s research career after finishing PhD , participate a research fellow in a project focused onexploring genetic susceptibility to cardiovascular disease in Egyptians, through identifying genetic polymorphisms in enzymes and regulatory proteins related to nitric oxide metabolism and oxidative stress that confer susceptibility to early incidence myocardial infarction among Egyptians. Genotype variants of these genes were correlated with biochemical data. Then a Postdoctoral fellow, PI in a project aims to clarify the association of selected SNPs in genes in the vitamin D pathway with cardiovascular disease. We also aim to correlate genotypes with circulating levels of 25(OH)D. Recently, I am joining a project focusing Brain and Gut Link in Multiple Sclerosis. Microbiome,Metagenomics.

After this experience around 10 years ago include, designing, conducting experiments and interpreting results. Interacting and working with scientists across many disciplines, while at the same time being able to work independently. Also developing new ideas showing motivation and focus.

Biography

She is a post-doctoral fellow in the Biochemistry department in the Faculty of Pharmacy and Biotechnology at the German University in Cairo (GUC). She acquired her PhD in 2021 and her M. Sc. in 2017 from the German University in Cairo in the field of Biochemistry. She received her B.Sc. degree from the German University in Cairo in 2015.

Her PhD project was awarded a DAAD bilateral funded scholarship where she performed part of her practical PhD work in the Leibniz Research Centre for Working Environment and Human Factors (IfADo)-TU Dortmund, Germany.

She has been teaching theoretical and practical courses in the Biochemistry department since 2015. Besides teaching and research, she is also a member of some administrative committees in the GUC including advising and mentoring committees.

Biography

A Post-doc fellow with an experience in memory studies, neuronal signaling, tumor biology, molecular pathology, genetic studies and immune-oncology. I am also currently employed by the German University in Cairo (GUC) as an Assistant Lecturer of Biochemistry. Research and teaching are my passion in life and I strive to continue learning and exchanging knowledge and hopefully leaving an imprint in my field

Research Interests

PhD, Gasotransmitters in Breast Cancer

Thesis: Non-coding RNAs Modulating Gasotransmitters’ Machinery System in Breast Cancer

• Performed studies on tissue samples of Egyptian female breast cancer patients and breast cancer cell lines.

• Worked on bioinformatics analysis programs

• Lab techniques included: RNA extraction, transfection experiments, RT-PCR, cell culturing, microscope imaging, analyzing cancer hallmarks, analyzing gasotransmitter levels

• Our study was the first to pinpoint a miRNA capable of quadruply targeting gasotransmitter synthesizing machinery as well as identifying a unique ncRNA-gasotransmitter axis with a prominent role in breast cancer progression.

• The outcome of part of this study was showcased in a publication in the Journal of Cellular Physiology as well as several international conferences.

MA, Sleep deprivation

Thesis: The Effect of Sleep Deprivation on Memory

• Performed in-vivo memory studies on murine models.

• Lab techniques included: ELISA techniques, animal-drug studies, developed a novel sleep deprivation model, Morris water maze model, Y maze model, western blotting.

• The outcome of the study was showcased in a publication in the journal of CNS and neurological disorders drug targets.
