Organic Chemistry I:
Theoretical course: The course aims that the student of the second year should have a thorough knowledge on various classes of aliphatic compounds, their nomenclature, synthesis, reactions and stereochemistry, their chemical and physical properties. The course covers hydrocarbons namely Alkanes, Alkenes, Alkynes, Alkyl halides, Alcohols, Aldehydes, Ketones, Carboxylic acids, Esters, Amides, and Lactones. In addition to that mastering various types of reactions like substitution, addition, elimination, cyclization reactions and their application in synthesis of vast amount of aliphatic compounds. Moreover, understanding various types of isomerism (Structural and Stereo) and conversion of achiral molecules into optically active ones.
Practical course: The course aims to introduce the students to General Laboratory Rules, Policies, and General Safety regulations applied in Organic Chemistry Laboratory, Lab Apparatus, Glassware and Facilities such as Melting Point Apparatus, Separating Funnel and Rotavap. The course also aims at Practicing the purification of solid organic compounds by Recrystallization, separation of Multi-Organic Components Mixture by Extraction. Finally, identification of alkanes, alkenes, alkylhalides, alcohols, aldehydes , ketones, phenols, carboxylic acids and their salts, esters and amines. |
